“I took this one near Stoney Point in Duluth, although it looks like it could be anywhere. I love the simplicity of the shot and the lines in the clouds and along the shoreline all leading into the shot,” said North Shore photographer Bryan Hansel.

What do a former runway model, a young man with cerebral palsy and a musher from Tennesse have in common? They’re all part of the field this year competing in the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon. Ten teams registered for the 373-mile marathon race, which runs from Duluth up the North Shore to the Gunflint Trail near the Canadian border and back. Thirty teams have registered for the mid-distance race.

Lake Superior is home to a thriving scene of about 50 surfers who brave the frigid water for waves they swear can compare to some of the best surfing in Hawaii or California.

Reporter Dan Kraker snapped these photos this morning of steam rising out of Lake Superior on his way to work this morning.
And being a good public radio reporter, he then talked to a scientist about the phenomenon to find out why.
The Coast Guard Cutter Alder is stationed in Duluth to cut through the ice and keep shipping channels open. The 2,000-ton boat can ram through ice that’s 3 feet thick, and leave a trail of open water even in the depth of a Duluth winter.

— Jane’s 18 year-old daughter became a victim of sex trafficking this summer and she’s speaking out. Daily in Minnesota and across the country, young girls are bought and sold for sex. A group of advocates and law enforcement officials in Duluth is trying to increase awareness of the dangers and bring an end to the trafficking of girls.
