New analysis by the Wall Street Journal suggests that tuition at public universities has been rising much faster than inflation because of bloated bureaucracies.
According to the Journal, since 2001 public universities across the country have been hiring twice as many managers as teachers. And the school at the top of the list of management-heavy institutions? The University of the Minnesota.
Paying for textbooks is becoming such a burden for college students, that today the University of Minnesota is launching an online project to hunt down free textbooks to replace the pricey ink-and-paper versions. It’s part of a national movement to cut the cost of textbooks.

We’ve been checking in with the college class of 2011 to see what they’ve been up to in the year since they’ve graduated.
One of the questions we’ve been asking is “What song, movie, book or other art speaks to how you’re feeling right now?”
Kristen Blake from River Falls, Wis. picked this song — “16 Tons” by Tennessee Ernie Ford.
She writes, “To put it simply, hard work and good intentions doesn’t mean you will succeed. The most challenging part of post-college life has been feeling conflicted about where I am now, where I want to be in my life and what direction I’m headed. Right now I’ve got a good job, which is more than a lot of my peers can say, but will it lead me to where I want to be? Should I sacrifice it for something that may or may not be better for me?”
